Common Issues with Nissan Vehicles
These are the repairs that actually come through our bays on Nissan vehicles.
High Frequency
Altima and Rogue — CVT Transmission Failure
Nissan's CVT is the most documented failure pattern in the lineup. CVT issues account for over 30% of powertrain complaints on Nissans from 2010–2020. Early symptoms include shuddering on acceleration, delayed throttle response, and a whining noise from the transmission. The 2013–2017 Altima and 2014–2016 Rogue were part of Nissan's own warranty extension. A CVT fluid change using Nissan-spec NS-3 fluid is the most important preventive step — once shudder starts, early diagnosis is the difference between a fluid service and a full replacement.
High Frequency
Nissan CVT — Valve Body Failure
The valve body manages hydraulic pressure inside the CVT. When it fails — which happens with notable frequency in Nissan's CVT design — symptoms include jerky or unpredictable shifts, delayed acceleration, and loss of power. A "check transmission" warning may also appear. Valve body failure requires transmission-specific diagnostics and is distinct from general CVT wear.
Common
Frontier and Pathfinder (2005–2010) — Radiator Coolant Contaminating Transmission Fluid
A known failure in the factory radiator on these models allows engine coolant to mix with transmission fluid. The result is milky fluid inside the transmission that destroys internal components quickly. If you own one of these vehicles and haven't had the radiator inspected, it's worth checking — the repair is much more manageable than replacing a transmission.
Common
Nissan Altima — EVAP System Faults and Check Engine Light
Check engine lights on Altimas frequently trace back to EVAP system faults — typically a failing purge valve or degraded fuel cap seal. These don't affect drivability immediately but will keep the check engine light on and can affect emissions testing. Proper diagnosis identifies the specific component rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
